Big Star’s Third

Books have been written and documentaries have been filmed that try to shed light on why the ‘70’s band Big Star never sold millions of albums. Bands like Yo La Tengo, Hot Chip, Whiskeytown, The Replacements and Elliott Smith all cite Big Star as a huge influence on their careers, yet many people still don’t know the band’s history.

At SXSW 2012, we co-produced a live tribute to Big Star at the historical Paramount Theatre. We brought together members of Wilco, R.E.M., Guns N’ Roses, The Posies, M. Ward, Lucero and many more to play with the last remaining band member, drummer Jody Stephens. Together, they shared with us why Big Star is so important to them, and they performed Big Star’s third album Sister/Lovers in its entirety. Their passion and love for the music was infectious and the legend of Big Star lives on.
